President’s letter, December 2019

PresLetter_DEC2019

Wow… 2019 is nearly over! As the year closes and we approach February’s legislative fly-in, I can safely say that APDC is well prepared and I look forward to attending to share our position with state legislators. In addition to visiting with legislators in their capitol offices, we plan to hold an afterhours social event to connect with them in a less formal atmosphere.  APDC will also host a lunch and learn event at the capitol regarding ASCE’s Report Card for Alaska’s Infrastructure.  In other words, we are working hard to up our game while in Juneau.  Stay tuned for more information as February approaches.

In mid-November, I attended the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA, https://www.asla.org) Conference on Landscape Architecture in San Diego.  I really enjoyed the trip for several reasons (besides the 75° sunny weather) to include:

  • An amazing exposure to continuing education via numerous sessions led by the experts in the field of landscape architecture. I was in awe of the quality of the sessions and the presenters… especially the emerging professionals.
  • The opportunity to visit with vendors that design and manufacture product solutions. The product representatives know their stuff and through collaboration with them, I found solutions to many current project challenges.
  • The chance to connect with other landscape architects from across the country. I was also able to visit with several Alaska landscape architects (https://www.akasla.org/) while there.
  • It refreshed and renewed my dedication to environmental design and landscape architecture. Many times, I was reminded of why I got into the field in the first place… to creatively blend the human and natural worlds together.

I encourage everyone to attend your respective member organization’s national conference events.  It is absolutely worth the time and planning.

I hope you have a great holiday with friends and family!
